Really just doing all of the quests you get lets you upgrade your ship at decent intervals throughout progression. One other thing you should keep aware of is that you’ll have to meet certain requirements to both access the quests and utilize the upgrades. The Ship Upgrade wiki page has links to all the quests needed to upgrade your ship, and what they require. While it may seem like a bit of a chore at first, just remind yourself that you’re doing it to unlock the quests that will help you get one of those larger badass ships. That means that if you go to the Outpost and there are no quests that grant upgrades as a reward, just start taking the quests that are there. This is because there are a lot of sidequests in Starbound and quite a few of them need to be completed in a specific order. Something that you should definitely note is that you won’t always find a quest that unlocks an upgrade there when you visit. You can obtain these quests from the Outpost, an old structure accessed through Ancient Gateways. Once that’s done you’ll gain access to questlines that will unlock different upgrades. Before you can upgrade anything, you’ll need to repair these which you’ll be guided through at the beginning of Starbound. When you start the game, your thrusters and FTL drive will be damaged. This ship, like many other elements of the game, can be upgraded to provide amenities such as more space, containers, crafting stations, and even furniture (so you can put a personal touch on things). They will receive increase of stats, but their name/image/icon will remain the same. While exploring the worlds of Starbound, you’ll be relying on your ship to get you through the deadly darkness of space. For example, Bug Net turns into Superior Bug Net and Fusion Cannon turns into Blastmark. Some items turn into another (better) item when upgraded. Some low-tier items are incredibly strong when upgraded: for example, tier 2 Bone-Steel armor is famous for its high Physical Resistance at high tiers. This allows you to use low-tier gear if you like its attack patterns (for weapons) and/or set bonuses (for armors). This costs Ancient Essence.Īfter you upgrade it to tier N, a low-tier weapon/armor will have viable stats (on the same level as armors/weapons that were tier N to begin with). At the Cosmic Crucible, you can upgrade tools.Upgraded armors don't receive such bonus: they are exactly the same as if they were upgraded with a Tricorder. When upgrading weapons, the Crucible will add a small bonus (on top of the stat increase that Tricorder could add) to various stats (damage, critical strike chance, etc.), see the page Cosmic Crucible for details. A player can chose to upgrade the ship organically by completing adventures and crewing the vessel with colonists, or they can purchase illegal license. At the Cosmic Crucible, you can upgrade weapon/armor (up to tier 10).Exact price is different for different tools. In your Personal Tricorder, you can upgrade tools (up to the maximum tier they support). This costs Upgrade Modules equal to the current tier of weapon: for example, upgrading tier 3 weapon to be tier 4 will require 3 modules. In your Personal Tricorder, you can upgrade weapon/armor (up to tier 6).Many tools ( Mining Laser, Multi-ore Detector, etc.) are also upgradeable. Most weapons and armors in FU can be upgraded (up to tier 10).
